Makarska lies 60 km south along the coast from Split and 140 km north of Dubrovnik. Inland towards the Bosnian border is the Biokovo Mountains with the highest peak of St. Jura (1762 m above sea level) or Vosac mountain (1422 m above sea level), thanks to the beautiful landscape, tourists, including Czechoslovakia, started to travel in the first half of the 20th century and the whole area was called Makarska riviera. And the most important buildings are St. Mark’s Church from the 18th Century and the Franciscan Monastery with a Malacological Museum.
