The island has been inhabited since ancient times, and according to one theory, its name in several languages refers to the abundance of forests that once covered it. Today, it is a popular destination for sailors, swimming enthusiasts, fishing, and water sports. Visitors appreciate the combination of a peaceful resort with many opportunities for active recreation. The coastline of Drvenik Veli is very indented, with some rocky areas. Many of the bays have pleasant smaller pebble and partly sandy beaches.
